Çankaya Atatürk and Republic Route

Route and Why This Order

This route brings together sites tied to the Republic's founding leadership and the capital's early symbols. It begins at Anıtkabir; the Atatürk and the War of Independence Museum within it is visited as a natural part of the same stop. From there the route continues to the Atatürk Museum Mansion; timing the visit for weekend opening hours is recommended. The nearby Pembe Köşk is open only during specific periods of the year, so the calendar should be checked before visiting. The route then descends to the city center, continuing at the 1935-built Güvenpark and the Hittite Sun Disc Monument in Sıhhiye; these two stops show the urban symbolism of the early Republic era. The day ends at Kocatepe Mosque, one of Turkey's largest mosques.

The total distance between stops is about 9.5 km; with museum visits, the route takes roughly 5-6 hours in a day. The interior of the Anıtkabir complex is covered on foot; a car or public transport is needed between the other stops.

When to Go

Those wishing to visit Pembe Köşk should pick the periods around 23 April or 29 October when it is open; outside those dates, the route can still be followed minus that stop.

Local Tip

Walking Anıtkabir's Lion Road early, before crowds form, allows the statues lining the path to be experienced in relative quiet.
